Introduction: Who we are
San Lorenzo Latin American Community Centre is the CRTC broadcasting licensed owner and operator of the Spanish-language community radio station CHHA 1610 AM. We were the first dedicated Spanish-language ethnic community radio licensed in Canada on the AM dial. Since 2004, we have broadcast on the 1610 AM band 18 hours per day, predominantly programming in Spanish with a minor percentage in English, Italian, Tagalog, Portuguese, and Punjabi. We are located at 22 Wenderly Drive in the heart of North York, Toronto.
Our audience consists of people of all ages within the Latin American community in the GTAH whose first language is Spanish, many of whom are new immigrants. Our mission is to empower the cohesive development of the Spanish-speaking community of Toronto by providing opportunities to promote cultural heritage, foster understanding and respect for diverse cultural roots, and provide programs to assist and support both newcomers to Toronto and longtime residents.
We produce programs designed to meet the needs of our audience. These programs focus on topics ranging from immigration and settlement to education, health, government programs and services, mixed in with daily local or international news. These programs provide information to assist the listeners in their daily lives. Coupled with the information services we broadcast, we also showcase local Latin American musical talent, seeking to encourage local musicians and provide opportunities to present them to a wide audience.
Latin Beats T.O. Program Description:
Latin Beats TO is a youth-focused weekly live radio show and radio segments in Spanish designed to deliver an extended platform for showcasing the latest sounds and emerging talents from Toronto’s Latin music scene.
Through engaging programming, including live performances, interviews, interactive segments, host discussions and commentary segments exploring various aspects of Latin American music and behind-the-scenes access, Latin Beats TO will invite young CHHA 1610 AM listeners to discover, dance, and connect with the rhythms of Latin music. This project will boost cultural creativity, expression, and empowerment, powered by youth culture’s energy and a commitment to inclusivity and diversity.
As part of this project, CHHA 1610 AM will increase the station’s content creation and programming hours by broadcasting Latin Beats TO, as a one-hour weekly radio show. Latin Beats TO segments will be featured in the morning and afternoon radio magazines, offering listeners the local cultural agenda.
Latin Beats TO will ensure its content is broadcast on-air and readily available across CHHA 1610 AM’s digital platforms.
