San Lorenzo Latin American Community Centre is looking to fill the following position for its community radio station, CHHA 1610 AM:

FULL-TIME BARGAINING UNIT RADIO HOST AND PROGRAM PRODUCER POSITION (35 HOURS PER WEEK) FOR THE MORNING PROGRAM:

“TODAY IN TORONTO – HOY EN TORONTO” WEEKDAYS FROM 6 AM – 10 AM.

The program focuses on connecting a Spanish-speaking audience with the Latinex and broader Toronto community, with regular community participation and with the goal of empowering the audience, enhancing their daily lives with local and alternative information, music, politics, social developments, international affairs and a wide range of subject matters; in a daily magazine broadcasting format.

Program requirements:

The program is conducted in Spanish.  The morning host for CHHA 1610 AM community radio develops, in magazine format, innovative and creative program content, including selected music from local musicians; provides an analysis of issues that matter to the Latin American Spanish-speaking community living in Toronto and the surrounding GTA (for example: touching on immigration, education, municipal, provincial and federal politics in Canada, and politics throughout Latin America, environmental issues, culture and community involvement).

With the aid of listeners calling in on an open phone line, the on-air host builds on questions posed by audience members touching upon the topics produced for that day.

The on-air host provides community services information, which is important to the Latin American Toronto and Greater Toronto Area audience about libraries, food banks, community health and dental clinics, community centers, and police services.

The program includes local news each hour with continuous traffic and weather updates throughout the early hours. As required from time to time, CHHA 1610 AM radio remote will broadcast direct from significant city events.

The following qualifications are required for this on-air host and program producer:

1. Fluency in oral and written Spanish and oral and written English.
2. Ability, engagement and dedication to host on-air for 4 hours every weekday with skills, experience or proven capability to develop compelling and interesting programming, including news production as well as a basic knowledge of radio operations including the radio console and radio remote.
3. Research skills to conduct research and produce original and creative programs on a variety of topics every weekday.
4. Canadian experience in radio broadcasting.
5. College diploma or university degree in radio broadcasting/ communications.
6. Ability to conduct live interviews with public personalities at CHHA 1610 AM
7. Ability to develop audience engagement through CHHA 1610 AM’s social media and digital platforms.
8. Familiarity and understanding of the CRTC (Canadian Radio Television Commission) regulations, including those that pertain to radio CHHA 1610 AM’s regulations as a community radio station.
9. Vibrant, outgoing and friendly personality and radio presence that engages and maintains a connection with the audience and that is likely to attract advertising revenue.
10. Ability to be flexible in unexpected situations.
11. Other duties as required.
